Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500) gets changes all the time. Stocks are removed and others added for example.  Below is a list of these changes in chronological order.  Typical reasons for changes are acquisitions, or trying to keep the index up with the times as companies grow, shrink, split off other companies, or fail to perform.  This of course directly impacts something like the ETF with symbol of SPY.  The index follows 500 companies but can actually be tracking and investing into more than 500 security symbols at any time depending on company actions.  As of March 2015, there are 500 companies and 502 symbols tracked by the S&P 500 and based on January 2015 statement, it is expected that 505 symbols will be tracked in September 2015.  Please make sure to review our content policy at the bottom of this website page. Data Usage Note: Delete and Add dates listed are shifted to the first day a stock symbol actually shows or removed from boards.  For example if S&P 500 announces addition of a company stock after close on Friday March 20, 2015, then we would list it as Monday March 23, 2015, since that would be the first trade day it actually shows up.
